US human rights report lists conscript death, Wang's case



the death of Hung Chung-chiu (洪仲丘) has drawn speculations on alleged use of torture in Taiwan's military.

“The case and the military's response sparked accusations of torture, mass protests that led to the resignation of the minister of defense, and passage of an amendment to the law, retroactively applied to this case, transferring jurisdiction of military criminal cases to the civilian judicial system during peacetime,” it said. The 24-year-old died of heatstroke in July 2013, following time spent in military detention during which his superiors allegedly forced him to exercise in high temperatures.
